Does this mean I’ll have to start liking Drew Barrymore?

Really? Never Been Kissed and He’s Just Not That Into You and 50 First Dates Drew Barrymore? Because based on everything I’ve seen and read about this upcoming Grey Gardens HBO movie, I think this might be the case.

I really appreciate and admire her devotion to creating a performance that is both authentic and respectful:

To become Little Edie — and make no mistake, the usually multitasking, hyperinvolved Barrymore became her — took tremendous sacrifice. For three months, Barrymore shut herself off from the modern world: no cell phone, no texting, no e-mails and no newspapers — other than The New York Times from when Little Edie read it.

She worked on her accent for a year. “For three solid months, I watched the documentary every single day,” Barrymore says. [full article]

This is the first time – in a LONG time – where I’ve actually gotten chills from a movie preview. Lange, Barrymore, the (revolutionary) costumes, the art direction, are so good, the line begins to blur between the actual documentary, and the HBO film.

“It’s very difficult to keep the line between the past and the present. You know what I mean? It’s awfully difficult.”

– “Little” Edie Beale

I mean, this looks like everything I’d hoped it would be.

Let’s just hope my expectations aren’t shat on.

  1. Holy cow. I had no idea she was in it. Ha! Now all I need to do is get a new sound card for my computer so I can actually watch videos.

  2. I agree. Perhaps Drew will get more respect now. This seems like an amazing performance. Wasn’t it interesting that she admitted to talking out of the side of her mouth and having to completely change her manner of speech. And it’s remarkable.
