Tonight I’m seeing the opening night of the Chicago engagement for the first national tour of Spring Awakening (how’s that for an awkward lead-in?).

I’m looking forward to it. A natural contrarian, I tend to dislike things that are pop culture hits — particularly in the theatre. I also dislike angsty tween pop songs about sex and love and the like.

Clearly I need to get over myself and approach this show with an open mind. Many respected theatre types, including many friends, have seen it — or have the cast recording — and love it.
