Diva Friday: Marin Mazzie

Hello Readers!

Herr Roberto is on vacation in Colorado Springs for a spell, and has asked me to fill in and contribute a diva tribute.  As I adore the ‘Diva Friday’ series, I was happy to oblige~!

My selection?

The one and only… Marin Mazzie. (marinmazzie.com)

The Mesmerizing Marin Mazzie is an astonishing singer.

And incredibly hot.

The backstory is that of a hard-working actress who earned her acclaim.

Born in Rockford, Illinois (in 1960, which makes her 49 years old – and damn, she looks great!)  Marin grew up singing in choirs and doing musicals. She did summer stock and regional shows, finally working her way to Off-Broadway, some television, Broadway (she undertudied the original Broadway cast of INTO THE WOODS, eventually taking over as Rapunzel – and took over the role of Mary Jane in the original production of BIG RIVER, did you know?) as well as her own cabaret.

Her first notable role was that of Clara in the original Broadway cast of Sondheim’s PASSION – Playing the rather bland role of Clara (the pretty, rich woman who is 1/3 of a love triangle) Marin did everything she could with the part and earned good reviews. The show was perhaps most notable for the opening scene, in which Marin and Jere Shea bared all.

PASSION is available on DVD -check it out!

Marin’s first Tony nomination came in 1998 when she created the role of Mother in the original Broadway cast of RAGTIME, a landmark masterpiece musical based off the E.L. Doctrow novel.

Thank goodness for youtube!

Her second nomination came when she played Kate/Lilli in the revival of KISS ME, KATE (opposite her RAGTIME – and frequent – co-star, Brian Stokes Mitchell). She has since reunited with Mitchell for productions of MAN OF LA MANCHA, and a concert production of KISMET.

In May 2008, she played the role of Guinevere in a Live from Lincoln Center concert production of CAMELOT with Gabriel Byrne and Nathan Gunn. A 48 year old most beautiful woman in the kingdom? Damn right.

Also – from 2006 to 2008 she played The Lady of the Lake in the Broadway production of SPAMALOT.

In her real life, she is married to actor/singer Jason Daniely, and the two have released an album together – “Opposite You’ – consisting of duets.

Currently, the Marvelous Miss Mazzie is playing Blanche in the Berrington Stage production of  A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE – Once again, proving she’s got it. :)

  1. Hooray for three of my favorite things coming together: Bob’s blog, Jamie, and Marin!!!! Good choice, love!

  2. I would like everyone to know how hard it was to not use this opportunity to post embarrasing pictures of Bob from community theatre musicals when we were teenagers.

    But I’m above that.

  3. Great article Jamie however Marin’s first Tony Nomination came for “Passion” where she was nominated for Featured Actress and lost to Audra. Also I remember her from the national tour of “And the World Goes Round” and was in the Goodman’s Production of “Riverview” before she did “Passion”. She was mainly noticed by Frank Rich before all that for belting Not a Day Goes By in “Merrily We Roll Along” at San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse.
