I’ve already reflected on this fantastic production a few posts ago. And now, here is a snippet of my admittedly wordy review. (I just had so much to say!)
The moment Tracy Turnblad (played by the radiant Marissa Perry) opens her eyes, jumps out of bed, and starts singing the virtues of another Baltimore morning, you’re hooked. Perry, along with the company of Marriott Theatre’s sparkling new production of Hairspray, kicks off one of the most entertaining evenings you’re likely to encounter this theatrical season or next.
Quite simply: Marriott has a hit on their hands.
Hairspray is absolutely one of my favorite musicals. I saw it for the first time a couple years ago on a non-Equity tour with no one whose name you’d recognize and I loved it. Catchy tunes, a great story and memorable characters will win out every time.
Plus, I may have mentioned this before, but I love the fact that it’s a truly integrated musical, with substantive parts for black and white actors.
Whenever the movie’s on HBO, I am hooked. The property is just so good, even Travolta can’t mess it up!
