While most “Sondheads” are buzzing about recent casting news related to the Kennedy Center’s upcoming production of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies, this Chicago Theatre Addict is thinking about a Nov. 9 concert of the musical to support the Chicago Humanities Festival.
Chicago musical theatre director Doug Peck hinted at this concert when I interviewed him a few months ago, and now casting is shaping up. It looks like Hollis Resnik, Barbara Robertson and Kevin Gudahl will star (I’m assuming as Sally, Phyllis and Ben, respectively — but not sure). E. Faye Butler has also been announced (perhaps as Stella — the one who sings “Who’s That Woman”?), among others. It’s an amazing array of Chicago musical theatre talent.
(However, I’m trying not to get too excited about this casting. Last time I attended a benefit concert of Sondheim music starring Robertson and Butler, they both backed out at the eleventh hour due to scheduling conflicts. But we’ll still have that glorious Sondheim score regardless.)
I’m as giddy as a schoolgirl throwing daisies, or however that lyric goes, and can’t wait for Nov. 9. Get your tickets for this concert here >
(And, hello? This is essentially a tryout for my dream production of Follies. In my mind, anyway …)
