A New York state of mind: Anything Goes, Betty Buckley, Follies and more

Hello lovlies! I’m in NYC for a few days, and have a full theatre schedule lined up, featuring some of Broadway brightest divas: Sutton Foster, Betty Buckley and Bernadette Peters.

Last night: Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of Anything Goes. Overall, lots of fun and Sutton is swell — but, for me, the true star of the show is John McMartin. The guy knows how to steal a scene. Really tacky sound design, however. From my third row seat, the orchestra — only six feet away in the pit — sounded like it was being piped in from another room on tinny speakers.

Tonight: Betty Buckley’s new one woman show, Ah Men! The Boys of Broadway, at Feinstein’s. I have very fond memories of the last time I saw Buckley at this classy and cozy venue (in 2008), and I’m looking forward to repeating them. (But without the penthouse Park Avenue view this time, alas, alack)

Tomorrow: Sons of the Profit matinée (a last-minute decision) followed by Follies, which stars Peters. And thus begins The Great Follies Smack-Down of 2011.

I’ll report back on all!
